Kontroll
JP, my friend, you’ve done it again. Every time we talk about film or books you always drop something I’ve never heard of in my lap! Today we’re talking about the 2003 indie film Kontroll.
Holding down a solid 7.7 on IMDB and certified fresh with 82% on Rotten Tomato this Hungarian film has indie written all over it.
- Relatively small budget
- Success at festivals
- Next to no one has ever heard of it
- A cultist, rabid fan base… Seriously, in the land of YouTube comments where the trolliest of trolls linger, there is nothing but love for Kontroll.
JP lays out just why he thinks Kontroll should be on the list of 50 Favorite Indie Films here in his own words:
It is a very strange but engaging film that leaves you guessing as to what exactly you just saw. It takes place in Budapest HU, and follows the misadventures of a five-man team of subway ‘kontrollers’ who have the thankless task of monitoring passengers tickets without any real authority to back them up. And one of them may or may not be a serial killer who is pushing people in front of trains.
It also features one of funniest foot chase scenes ever filmed.
In contention for the 2004 Un Certain Regard at Cannes and a 3.5 star review from Ebert, this film has the juice! Here’s the official trailer, take a look and let us know what you think.
I just know Kontroll is going to get the votes and land high on the list of 50 Favorite Indie Films!
